Heat Embossed Ceramic Dishes

With my recent discovery of heat embossing, I have been trying to find new projects and ways to use this awesome medium! This week I decided to purchase some cheap ceramic dishes from the dollar store and try heat embossing quotes onto them after seeing plenty of inspiration on Instagram and Pinterest. These dishes were fairly easy to decorate with the heat embossing powder and will be great to organize some of my beauty products! Follow along down below for instructions on how to make them!

Supplies

-Ceramic dish

-Cricut

-Orcale 631 Vinyl or Stencil Film

-Heat Gun

-Clear Embossing Ink Pen

-Gold Heat Embossing Powder

-Scissors

-Transfer Tape (makes life easier)

-Small Paint Brush

-Ruler

1. Choose Your Quote

For these dishes I chose to type out my words in Photoshop and then transfer them over to the Cricut Design Space. Be sure to measure the exact size you want the letters on your dish so they will fit before you cut out your stencil.

2. Make Your Stencil

After setting everything up on your Cricut, cut our your stencil on the "Vinyl" setting using either Oracle 631 Vinyl, which is easily removable, or any other stencil material that can be purchased at the craft store. When it comes to applying your stencil, use transfer tape to move your vinyl from the backing to the desired spot on your dish for a perfect transfer. (Mine looks messy because I was out of transfer tape when I did this project, which made everything very messy and difficult.)

3. Time To Ink

After your stencil is applied, take your ink marker and colour in all of the empty space, ensuring to go over each section multiple times to make sure you don't have to go back in with the marker after the stencil is removed.

4. Embossing Powder

Carefully remove your stencil making sure not to smudge any of the clear ink with your fingers and pour your embossing powder over the entirety of the dish. Try to keep it to a thin layer because it will make the next step of brushing off the excess powder much easier.

5. Cleaning Up

After dumping off your embossing powder, you will notice that a ton of powder is stuck to the slippery ceramic surface in all the places that you don't want it to be. Take your paint brush and slowly clean up the dish, taking your time to brush off all the excess around the letters and on the sides of your dish. This step is the most time consuming part of the project, but it is also the most important, because if you don't wipe off all of the excess powder, it will melt to the dish in all of the places you don't want it, making the finished project very messy looking.

6. Heat & Melt

When you're ready to heat your plate, place it on top of an old towel or oven mitt, since the ceramic will get very hot during the heating process and take a few minutes to cool down. Be patient when doing this step since the embossing powder will take much longer to melt on the ceramic then it does on paper or other materials.
